재고자산은 유통업의 경우는 상품, 제조업의 경우는 원재료 · 재공품 · 제품이 해당된다.

유통업이나 제조업의 경우 전체 자산에서 재고자산이 차지하는 비중이 매우 크므로, 재고자산을 효율적으로 관리하는 것은 기업의 수익성 뿐만 아니라 유동성에도 큰 영향을 미치는 중요한 관리항목이다.
